Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 8, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Maxime Atton, an independent game developer operating under the name Voidworks Games (referred to as "Voidworks Games", "we", "us", or "our"), collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you play Sunward (the "Game") or visit our website at sunward.voidworks.games (the "Site").

We are based in France and act as the data controller for the personal data described below, within the meaning of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

We keep the Game’s data footprint deliberately small. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who we are

The data controller responsible for your personal data is Maxime Atton, operating as the independent studio Voidworks Games, in France. You can reach us about anything in this policy at privacy@voidworks.games.

Information we collect

The data we process depends on how you interact with Sunward. It falls into the following categories.

Epic account data (Epic Account Services)

When you launch Sunward through the Epic Games Store and sign in with your Epic account, the Game uses Epic Online Services (EOS), specifically Epic Account Services, to authenticate you. Through this, Epic provides us with a limited set of data: your Epic Account ID, an Epic Online Services product user ID (a pseudonymous identifier unique to Sunward), and your Epic display name.

We use this only to sign you in to the Game’s online features and to record your achievements and gameplay statistics against your account. We never receive your Epic Games password, e-mail address, payment details, friends list, or full profile.

Epic Games independently collects and processes data when you use your Epic account, acting as its own separate data controller. That processing is governed by Epic’s own privacy policy, which we encourage you to read.

Steam data

When you play Sunward through Steam, the Game uses the Steam platform to record achievements and to synchronise your saved games via Steam Cloud. This involves your Steam ID and your save data, and takes place under Valve Corporation’s privacy policy.

Gameplay data, achievements, and statistics

Sunward records your progress toward achievements and certain gameplay statistics so they can be unlocked and displayed on the platform you play on (Epic or Steam). Your saved games are stored locally on your device and, where you enable it, in that platform’s cloud-save service.

Crash reports and technical diagnostics

If the Game encounters an error or crash, it may send us a diagnostic report so we can fix bugs and improve stability. A report can include the crash details, your operating system and hardware configuration, the Game version, and a pseudonymous identifier. It is not used to identify you personally.

Newsletter and mailing list

If you choose to sign up for Sunward news, we collect the e-mail address you provide (and, optionally, a name). We use it only to send you occasional updates about the Game, such as release news and major updates. Every e-mail includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time.

Website data

When you visit the Site, our hosting provider automatically processes standard technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you view, in server logs, in order to deliver the Site securely and reliably. The Site also stores one small functional cookie (sunward_locale) to remember your language preference. Any website analytics are described in the Cookies and analytics section below.

How we use your data, and our legal bases

We process your personal data for the following purposes, each with a legal basis under Article 6 GDPR:

  • To provide the Game’s online features, such as signing you in, unlocking achievements, and recording statistics. Legal basis: performance of a contract (providing the Game you requested).
  • To fix bugs and improve stability using crash reports and diagnostics. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in maintaining a stable, high-quality game.
  • To send you the newsletter updates you have signed up for. Legal basis: your consent, which you may withdraw at any time.
  • To operate, secure, and measure the performance of our Site. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in a functioning, secure website and in understanding, in aggregate, how the Site is used; you can object to the analytics at any time via the opt-out in the Cookies and analytics section.
  • To comply with our legal obligations and to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims where necessary. Legal basis: compliance with a legal obligation and our legitimate interests.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers that make the Game and Site work, and only to the extent necessary. These recipients are:

We may also disclose data where required by law, or where necessary to protect our rights, our users, or the public.

International data transfers

Some of our service providers (including Epic Games, Valve, and Cloudflare) are located in the United States or operate globally. When your personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision, so that your data continues to benefit from an equivalent level of protection.

How long we keep your data

We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy. Account, achievement, and statistics data are kept for as long as your platform account remains linked to the Game; crash reports for as long as needed to diagnose and fix the underlying issue; newsletter data until you unsubscribe; and server logs for a short period for security and troubleshooting. When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have your data erased, to restrict or object to our processing, to receive your data in a portable format, and, where processing is based on consent, to withdraw that consent at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@voidworks.games. We will respond within one month. Some data, such as your Epic or Steam account data, is controlled by the platform itself; for that data you may also need to contact Epic Games or Valve directly.

If you believe we have not handled your data properly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In France this is the Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), www.cnil.fr.

Children’s privacy

Sunward is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 15 (the age of digital consent in France). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Cookies and analytics

The Site itself sets two strictly necessary cookies: sunward_locale, to remember your chosen language, and sunward_consent, to remember your analytics choice (it holds only "granted" or "denied" and is kept for six months). These cookies are strictly necessary for the Site to work and do not require consent.

We use Google Analytics 4 (provided by Google LLC) to understand, in aggregate, how visitors use the Site: which pages are viewed, which store links are clicked, whether the trailer is played. It runs by default and sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier) on your device; a banner informs you on your first visit. If you opt out, from the banner or the buttons below, the measurement stops immediately, the Google Analytics cookies are deleted, and the script is no longer loaded on later visits. Opting out does not affect your use of the Site in any way.

Two third-party embeds also appear on the Site: the itch.io purchase widget on the home page, served by Itch Corp., which may set its own cookies under itch.io’s privacy policy, and the trailer, embedded from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced domain (youtube-nocookie.com), which only loads if you press play. These embeds are governed by those providers’ own policies.

You can change your mind about analytics at any time, in either direction, using the buttons below. Your choice is remembered for six months.

Your current analytics choice

No choice made yet: analytics measurement is on by default.

How we protect your data

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, including serving the Site over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and limiting who can access data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example if we add new features or change service providers. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page, and, for significant changes, we will provide a more prominent notice.

Contact us

If you have questions, requests, or concerns about this Privacy Policy or your personal data, contact us at privacy@voidworks.games. Maxime Atton (Voidworks Games), France.

A quick word about analytics

We use Google Analytics to see how visitors use this site (which pages, which links). You can opt out here or at any time on the privacy page; opting out changes nothing about your visit. Privacy Policy
